What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical and cosmetic procedure that removes fat that can’t respond to diet and exercise. This kind of fat removal is not a weight-loss tool. The procedure does not eliminate cellulite, but rather, fat.
Liposuction is often used on the abdomen, upper arms, hips and thighs, calves and ankles, buttocks, neck and chin.
It can also be performed as part of other surgeries, for example tummy tucks, breast reductions, male gynaecomastia and facelifts.
For the procedure, you have to be completely healthy. Restricted blood flow, coronary artery disease, diabetes or a weak immune system can complicate the procedure and the results.
The surgical risks depends on the amount of fat removed. The amount of fat that can be removed from an area is limited by what is safe.
Is general anesthesia necessary?
The operation is performed under the general or local anesthesia, and usually takes between one and three hours, depending on the size of the area being treated. A local anesthetic might be used when liposuction is done on very small areas.
How is liposuction performed?
There are a number of liposuction techniques:
Power-assisted Liposuction uses a cannula, a thin tube is inserted through tiny cuts in the skin and the fat suction is usually performed with a powerful vacuum machine
Laser-assisted Liposuction uses laser heat instead of the brute force. The laser’s heat naturally closes blood vessels and tightens collagen.
Ultrasound assisted Liposculpture (VASER) uses ultrasound vibrations to burst the walls of the fat cells to help disrupt the fat cells and make them easier to remove.
Because it is specific to fat cells, it never causes a connective tissue damage. That makes the skin tightenning and healing faster.
Radiofrequency asissted Liposuction
uses radiofrequency waves to disrupt fat tissue.
How long is the liposuction recovery period?
Recovery is usually in one to two weeks.
You need to wear elasticated support corset or compression bandage for two to four weeks. They help reduce swelling. You may need to wait a few days before returning to work and should be back to normal exercise in three to four weeks.
You may see the full benefit of the liposuction for up to six months.
You may need further surgery or other treatments to maintain the results of the fat removal.
What are the complications of liposuction ?
-Swelling, bruising and pain can take weeks to settle.
-Scars become paler over 12 to 18 months
-Bruising and bleeding
-Infection
-Increased or reduced sensation improves in 6 to 8 weeks.
-Seroma : fluid accumulation
-Friction burns
-Asymmetry . The contours of the treated areas can sometimes be irregular.
-Change of colour of the skin
-Fat embolism
-Damage to internal organs. A cannula that penetrates deeply may puncture an internal organ
-Change over time as a result of putting on or losing weight, ageing, pregnancy
-Allergic reaction to anesthetics, solutions, tape or stitches .
